Books in Order: A Deep Dive into the Life and Works of Author, Robert Louis Stevenson
Born in 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson hailed from Scotland and gained widespread recognition for his masterpieces, Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Although he drew admiration during his lifetime, literary mentionables like Virginia Woolf unceremoniously relegated him to the status of a “second-class writer” post World War I. However, this didn’t diminish his legacy. Stevenson’s literary prowess saw a revival when Roger Lancelyn Green, a member of the Oxford Inklings, lauded him as “a writer of a consistently high level of literary skill or level of sheer imaginative power.”
Stevenson embarked on his literary journey with his first novel, The Hair Trunk or The Ideal Commonwealth. This project, however, remained unfinished and unpublished. His next venture proved serendipitous. In 1883, he published one of his most celebrated novels – Treasure Island. Transitions in his writing style and thought process can be observed by examining his books in order of publication.
