Born and brought up in New York, Doctorow’s journey to excellence started at Kenyon College in Ohio. His educational journey took an abrupt turn when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in the Signal Corps in Germany during the post-war Allied occupation. Not one to be swayed from his path, Doctorow returned to New York and found a position with a motion picture company. Reading countless westerns stirred new inspirations within him, leading to the conception of his debut novel, Welcome to Hard Times, that started as a parody but transformed into a serious western genre entry. Tragically, Doctorow’s illustrious life was cut short in 2015 due to lung cancer.
