Barry Sadler (1940-1989) was a celebrated American author renowned for his exceptional military fiction novels. He created the renowned Casca series that was later brought back to life by subsequent authors. Before zipping into the literary world, Sadler served in the U.S. Army being a Green Beret medic and Staff Sergeant during the Vietnam War era. Not only was Sadler adept at penning down gripping war stories, but his musical flair also seeped into the hearts of many with his album, “The Ballad of the Green Berets,” which plagued the airwaves with a hit single by the same name.
1978 saw a dark cloud hover over Sadler’s life when he shot country music singer-songwriter Lee Emerson Bellamy due to a dispute over a woman, Darlene Sharp. The incident, further aggravated by Bellamy’s persistent harassing calls and threats, led Sadler to serve a sentence for voluntary manslaughter. However, he only served 21 days of his 4-5 years sentence.
