As a young boy, he, his mother, and sister endured life in a Japanese internment camp in Tokyo until the war’s end reunited them with their father in San Francisco.
Blending his love for the court and the classroom, Meschery attended Lowell High School and later Saint Mary’s College. His standout basketball skills landed him All-American honors, and he got drafted by the Philadelphia (which later became the Golden State) Warriors in 1961. His notable NBA career spanned a decade, playing for the Warriors and the Seattle Sonics.
His life took a turn toward education and literature once his basketball career ended. Meschery obtained an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa and embarked on a teaching journey, instilling high school and community college students with a passion for literature and creative writing for 26 years. Despite being retired, residing in Sacramento, California, with his wife, painter Melanie Marchant, Meschery continues to weave tales through poetry and fiction.
